Lou Clark

Lou Clark, Artistic Director
- is a playwright, director, theater educator and producer living in Albuquerque , New Mexico .  Her plays have been produced in Austin, Boulder , Denver , New York City, Seattle, Washington DC and locally by Ka-HOOTZ, UNM’s Words Afire Festival, the Vortex and VSA North Fourth Art Center .  Plays written for adults and young audiences include The Politics of Hair, GodAwful Dress, Searching for Calliopeia, I Sea (winner of a Kennedy Center National Playwriting Award), WONDERDOG and Cinderella & the Beanstalk commissioned by Pollyanna Theatre Company scheduled to premiere in 2010 at Austin ’s Long Performing Arts Center .  Directing credits include:  Reflections by Solarity Theater Company, THE 49 SINS for Ka-HOOTZwith Becca Holmes, THE SEVEN New Play Festival with Fusion Theatre Company, the world premiere of Body Burden by Dale Dunn, a staged reading of Grand Delusions by Ross Maxwell at the Kennedy Center, a workshop production of her own original solo piece The Politics of Hair in the One Woman Standing Developmental Series at Emerging Artist Theatre in New York City, Searching for Calliopeia in the Words Afire New Play Festival at the University of New Mexico (winner of a Regional Directing Award and an Honorable Mention for the National Student Director Kennedy Center Award) and the New Mexico premiere of I Am My Own Wife at the Vortex Theatre.  She has taught playwriting to:  Adults with disabilities at VSA North Fourth Art Center , Native American at-risk youth in Acoma, to graduate and undergraduate university students and is currently the Playwright in Residence at Manzano Day School .   Prior to moving to New Mexico, Ms. Clark completed a season long artistic internship at Seattle Repertory Theatre assisting artists that included Producing Artistic Director Jerry Manning, Tony Award winning director Daniel Sullivan and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright August Wilson.  Training also includes a BA in Theater and English from Manhattanville College and intensive programs with the Bonderman Conference, the Kennedy Center and London ’s Royal Court Theatre .  She also holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing, with distinction, from the University of New Mexico .  As a student, she served as Associate Producer for the Words Afire New Play Festival from 2003-2007 producing more than 80 new plays by students.  Ms. Clark is also the Artistic Director of Solarity at VSA North Fourth Art Center and a member of the Dramatists Guild of America.
